Experimental Studies on Cross Circulation between Normal Dogs and Dogs with Disturbed Liver Function

Abstract
Cross circulation between hepatectomized dogs and untreated normal dogs was instituted to investigate the effect of cross circulation on the levels of serum total protein and blood sugar in the hepatectomized animals.
As the preliminary experiments, cross circulation between normal dogs was done to study the effect of cross circulation on the levels of serum total protein and blood sugar of the dogs and as an another control study, hepatectomy of the normal dogs were done, and the levels of serum total protein and blood sugar together with survival time of those animal were studied.
The results of the experiments are summarized as follows;
1) During and after the cross circulation between 5 pairs of normal dogs, no remarkable changes were noted on the levels of serum total protein and blood sugar.
2) When the total hepatectomy of normal dogs was made in 6 animals, marked and rapid decrease of the levels of serum total protein and blood sugar was observed and all the animals expired within 1?2 hrs 50 min. (average 1 hr, 41 min. )after the operation.
3) In the cross circulation between 5 pairs of hepatectomized dogs and normal untreated dogs, serum total protein and blood sugar of the hepatectomized animals were markedly improved during cross circulation, serum total protein and blood sugar showed 5. 9?6. 9 gm/dl and 49.3?74. 2 mg/dl. respectively.
The hepatectomized dogs cross circulation with normal ones survived for 3?4 hrs 50 min.
